The Archers is the first book of an exciting saga of action and adventure set in medieval England. In this compelling tale, an Englishman rises to become the captain of a company of archers and leads its survivors back to England from King Richard's crusade. Not all of the archers return as a result of intense fighting, but some of the former serfs and free men do return - as hardened veterans determined to improve their lot in cruel and brutal medieval England. This novel combines military historical fiction with a family saga.

I dislike the reader’s varying from the original text as written. Those frequent dips back into likely Middle English and archaic words give this story of 13th century Brits a very colorful tone. Too bad for us listeners. Otherwise he didn’t fall into the trap set by French words & phrases that totally ruin most reader’s attempts to tell a story.

This book starts a very pleasant series that details the actions of a band of archers who are all that remains from a much larger group that set out to crusade with King Richard of England. The narrator does an excellent job of telling the story. The storyline continues with additional books that are just as good!

An entertaining medieval tale of a band of archers fresh from the crusades

Tedious repetition of boring and unimportant detail? Check.
Lack of narrative drive or story arc? Check.
Lack of character development? Check.
Action completely lacking in drama or tension? Check.
I wonder how the narrator managed to not fall asleep while recording this. The narrator is generally good--but why does a Damascene Jew in the ancient Roman empire have the accent we might imagine for a "Shylock" from the Shtetl? Still, that's a triviality.

Sadly there was so Little to like here on top of some really poor narration I could not stomach the entire book.
