What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace." "Cheap grace," Bonhoeffer wrote, "is the grace we bestow on ourselves...grace without discipleship....Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the girl which must be asked for, the door at which a man must know....It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life."

The Cost of Discipleship is a compelling statement of the demands of sacrifice and ethical consistency from a man whose life and thought were exemplary articulations of a new type of leadership inspired by the Gospel, and imbued with the spirit of Christian humanism and a creative sense of civic duty.

Perfectly read to enhance learning. Those who stay away from this book because people have said Bonhoeffer is too hard to understand have never read his works. He speaks in common everyday easy to understand language. It is the message that is difficult to hear compared to the pablum given out in most Xn book stores. Bonhoeffer will challenge you to obey Christ's call to his Lordship, to do what he says as the first act of faith. Obedience according to D. B. comes before faith not as the result of it. Jesus said to the rich young ruler, "Come down," and to Peter, James, and John, " Follow Me." We obey Jesus because of who he is and come to believe the gospel because of what he has done. The reason people don't believe is because they are unwilling to obey his command to follow. This book will change you life after you throw it against the wall. You will need Christ to obey. You will need Christ to believe. You will need Christ to repent. You will need Christ to live the Xn life and you will find joy in doing so but it will cost you everything.

One of the best books ever written about Lordship

A powerful testament of living a life conformed to Christ. Written by a man who gave all for Christ in the darkest of days so should we be more accountable to our Lord, taking all opportunity to do the Lords work in the ease of our present day.

Listen to this book in short meditations, there is a lot here to take in. The narrator is easy to fallow but because of the depth of the message I needed to go back re-listen to many parts to take it all in.

I bought many copies of the book afterward as well. I'm giving them to friends and family. I believe Christianity is watered down and practiced more like zen then death to self. This book is highly recommended for all who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

Excellent and powerful
