Commander Christopher Elders and the crew of the USS Scranton were on a mission in the Black Sea when the Zombie Apocalypse occurred. Their mission required a total communications blackout during the thirty days they were submerged. They were totally unaware what was happening in the world above them. Matt and Jesse shared a cell in the North Carolina State prison system. They had no idea what was going on in the outside world. Other than a few unreliable rumors that circulated among the prisoners, it was life as usual. Even if they had known what was going on, they probably still wouldn’t have cared. It wasn’t until the guards stopped showing up with their food did they start to become concerned. Bill, his wife Sue and their two girls lived outside the small town of Plymouth, North Carolina. The girls were getting ready for their first day of school. Bill was getting prepared to start his new job. When the town’s power went out, all their plans were put on hold. They settled in to enjoy their unexpected, extended summer vacation. All of the three groups had two things in common. They were all in for a shock when they began to discover what had happened to the world. Some were horrified at what they discovered. Others felt the changes created a great opportunity. The second thing they had in common was the feeling that they might possibly be the last people on earth still alive. However, only one of the groups held the key to the survival of mankind. I really like this author. I’ve listened to about 6 of his books(all AI narrated) and each book was not enjoyable than the last. The virtual voice isn’t as bad as it was initially. The story held its own so the narrator’s mispronunciation didn’t bother me as much.
I like the mix of zombies, likable characters, and bad guys getting theirs.
