The acclaimed #1 New York Times bestseller from Stephen King. A uniquely frightening thriller about a young girl lost in the woods as night falls, with only the voice of her beloved Red Sox relief pitcher to sustain her and help her survive—maybe.

During a six-mile hike on the Maine–New Hampshire branch of the Appalachian Trail, nine-year-old Trisha McFarland escapes the tension between her older brother and recently divorced mother. But when she strays off the path, she descends into a terrifying nightmare. Alone in the deep forest, Trisha must face the raw power of nature, with only her imagination, courage, and wits.

Drawing strength from her Walkman, Trisha finds comfort in Red Sox broadcasts and the imagined companionship of her idol, relief pitcher Tom Gordon. As the signal fades, she conjures visions of Gordon guiding her, even as she senses a darker presence nearby.©1999 Stephen King, All Rights Reserved; (P)1999 Simon & Schuster Inc., All Rights Reserved, AUDIOWORKS Is an Imprint of Simon & Schuster Audio Division, Simon & Schuster, Inc.

I’ve read the book numerous times and IMO this is one of the VERY few books where the Audiobook performance is worthy of the book.

After my first trip to Maine, 20 years after I first read/listened I downloaded to listen again and was not disappointed.

Ann Heche as 9 year old and tall for her age Trisha

I do not leaving a negative review but I’m not sure how I feel about the book. During the narration there were times that I drifted off and had no clue what I was listening to. Then there were other parts where I was clinging on. The narrator was either hit or miss throughout the book.
Towards the end don’t stop listening when chapter 12 kicks in there’s a really long odd pause. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because it’s older recording and just wasn’t able to be edited a certain way? Also, there was really odd music between chapters. If kind of threw me off when hearing it. I’m not sure why the music was even edited into the narrating.
This is the first book listening to where I didn’t know how to review. Everything was just “ok.”
It’s sad. I was expecting more from S. King but I’m sure some would really enjoy this book. Hopefully the next S.King will keep me more interested. Fingers crossed.

I wanted to give up multiple times…..(no legit spoilers)

This little story was definitely King at his best. He took an event, with very little to work with and made it into a story of drama, suspense, fear, and empathy. From the first moment to the very last word the reader was involved and entrenched in the story. I would highly recommend this book.

This was my first audible book. I've read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon twice. The story is smmooth and fluid. It draws you in as if your child were in the woods. Extremely believable.

This book was very suspenseful and thought provoking. The story is a psychological study of saving yourself under cruel conditions. King creates a 9 year old character who is likable, charmingly, and totally believable.. The baseball metaphor and Anne Heche's truly brilliant performance further enhance the narrative. However; there is an unexpected, ill-fitting musical interlude at the end of each "inning". Good job SK.
