'One of the finest historical fiction writers in the world' Ben Kane

Pisa, May 1364.

Sir William Gold is looking forward to a lucrative career as a hired sword in the endless warring between Italy's city states. But when a message comes from the Grand Master of the Hospitaliers, William is forced to leave his dreams of fame and fortune behind him.

The Hospitaliers are gathering men for a crusade, and Sir William must join them. Yet before they set out for the holy land, the knights face deadly adversaries much closer to home . . .

In the twisting politics of Italy, no one can be trusted. And there are those who would be pleased to see the crusade fail . . .

Can Sir William and his knights survive this impossible mission into the heart of the enemy?©2024 Christian Cameron

Always exciting and historically accurate.. I haven’t been able to put it down. I have been so attached to William Gold and his adventures. I plan to listen to all of the series.

Great story by Christian Cameron.
As a French speaker (but not an Old French scholar) the narrator’s pronunciation of French names (Emilie, Chrétien) is somewhat grating.

Excellent historical fiction

The author masters the art of putting the reader in the place of the character, and the character into his places(s). The honest look at concepts of chivalry, romance and historical context is refreshing in historical fiction.
The reading is next to none in audio books often the reader can make or break the book. this is case of the reader making the book come to life.

Fantastic listen

I love finding a new series (new to me) to get lost in. Christian Cameron weaves an exciting second story for William Gold. Peter Noble, the narrator, almost killed me at the beginning with his elongated pronunciations and slow delivery but I just bumped up the speed to 1.5 and that solved the problem nicely. I highly recommend this audio book and cannot wait to begin the third book.

Loved it!
