Thirteenth century. Wales and England. To young Gruffyd, life has been unkind. Eking out a meagre living with his father, he has learned very quickly how to look after himself in the hostile borderlands. His father, an archer, has taught him well, and at 17 Gruffyd is a keen and able bowman. Young, loyal and skilled, it’s not long before Gruffyd finds himself following in his father’s footsteps, working as an archer in the bordering castle. But tragedy strikes when his lord commits a devastating deed, and Gruffyd is forced to make a life altering decision. This is the story of a young archer’s riotous journey from avenging outlaw to merchant’s bodyguard to, finally, the captain of archers for the heir to the throne.

I liked the book overall and the narrator was on point. The thing I liked the least is how to protanogist is just great at everything and if he isn't, he becomes great over time. Not just that, he also KNOWS he is amazing. Phew, with that out of the way, the book was pretty enjoyable. There are better books out there with a similar story but having read most of them already, this one was worth the time.

Pretty grounded in realism (although not very historically accurate) but a jarringly overconfident protagonist

The resemblance to actual history and story structure along with closeness to reality. This writer keeps my attention always

Narrator great, book good. I should have learned from previous purchases to check Narrator for the following books in series. I did not! Heads up to all before you purchase the rest of the series. The Narrator changed in second book. Hard almost impossible to follow the different characters with new Narrator. Struggling now to get through second book. I am so disgusted with myself for wasting money.

Loved the first of this series.
