1878: When his family loses their home, to Jack Roberts, who has grown up hearing stories of the Crimean war and the magnificent charge of the Heavy Brigade, the choice between working in a dangerous factory or enlisting in the army and putting on the famed red uniform is an easy one. But when fighting for Queen and Country takes him far from home to defending a small mission station from overwhelming numbers, it is anything but easy and bravery and stoicism take on new meaning.

Good story, nice pace and a fun adventure. Too bad the next book in the series is not on Audible.

Good fun

I enjoyed it so much that it was over before I realized. for those who enjoy novels like the Sharpe novels, this is not that. This is more real, less fantastic, less ra ra hero, and more believable characters trying to survive in new surroundings and then trying to survive against all odds. Good stuff. Highly recommended.

very enjoyable

Really have grown to appreciate the author's noble characters and clean writing style. You don't always have to overcomplicate a plot or deploy corinthian language. The Parthenon used doric columns and that worked out just fine. To Griff, love your novels on vikings and knight but especially found this Victorian era book very exciting.

Solid story -likable and noble characters

Better than expected

It’s thrilling to discover the accounting of a historic battle of which I was not aware. Hosker is an amazing storyteller and this narrative is one of his best. While I knew that British troops occupied South Africa in the late 19th Century, I knew virtually nothing of the day to day lives of the soldiers. Now, I know.

Stunning battle scenes
