He only wanted to build a plaything - a small, simple device born of innate curiosity and a fascination of things mechanical. Scavenging parts and repurposing components, a country gunsmith assembles what is supposed to be a conversation piece - a trinket to show his friends... a toy really... a small rail gun.

The invention is so much more. After nearly destroying his West Texas shop, Dusty realizes he has stumbled upon science that could alter the future of mankind. The size and shape of a common rifle, his device is capable of producing unimaginable power. The simple, gentleman rancher is faced with a dilemma of the ages - thesurvival of the human race. The resulting technology can produce limitless, clean energy, or if used as a weapon, inconceivable destruction.

Nothing so monumental stays secret for long. Powerful men and desperate governments learn of the discovery, and it quickly becomes evident that whoever wields the rail gun can dominate the entire planet.

The book and it's premise were decent enough. Story line and characters were entertaining and relatively believable.

Unfortunately the narration sucked.

Many if the voices sounded similar and forced. I have to wonder what happened to the post production work because there were many instances of actually hearing the narrator breathe/wheeze to the point of being distracting. At times it was practically like being in the room with an asthmatic smoker!

Tip to the narrator - if you're going to read a story heavily centered around the gun culture and other technology aspects, you REALLY should be able to pronounce the words correctly. It wasn't just gun references either, there were numerous mispronounciations and fumbles where it could possibly have been poor editing of the text, but more likely based on the rest of the performance it was simply the wrong (but similar) word being read. I really expect more from a professional performance and to be completely honest there were a number of times that I nearly quit the book due solely to the narration.

Decent story, mediocre narrator

I enjoyed the authors other series, and took this as a recommendation. Like mike Gurdy's voice for men. But was jarred by the female voices. After listening for a few min, I stopped and now several years later started all over. Once I got past chapter 1. I realized what a great story the author had created and it filled every fee moment in time. I finished it in 2 days.

Not what I was expecting

Most interesting, I read the book first then downloaded the audio version and have enjoyed both very much. I like the sudo-science, along with the true science. Along with what our beloved fed gov would do to the person who held this device. All and all you'll enjoy the book.

It would be a great movie
