I liked the mystery and the interaction between Penelope and James. I would recommend this series.

I would rate these clean reads mysteries a step up from cozy as they do get serious. However, they are hardly today’s thrillers. In my opinion they walk a good line for a kind of gothic novel style mystery.

The first three books were a combination of pros and cons, guessing the villain early, middle, and wrong until the end (which was a pleasant change).

For me the biggest drawback is the last of romance. It takes slow burn down to just red coals burning. In this aspect I think we would get so much more out of also hearing the narrative of James. For me, it’s just too slow, hence the lost star.

Some Interesting twist, some predictability, tiny amount of romance

A collection of books, well done mysteries. Women, work, and history of nineteenth century efforts to restrain, contain, and improve women’s place in British Society.
