Sir Phillip knew that Eloise Bridgerton was a spinster, and so he'd proposed, figuring that she'd be homely and unassuming, and more than a little desperate for an offer of marriage. Except...she wasn't. The beautiful woman on his doorstep was anything but quiet, and when she stopped talking long enough to close her mouth, all he wanted to do was kiss her... and more. Did he think she was mad?

Eloise Bridgerton couldn't marry a man she had never met! But then she started thinking...and wondering...and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match. Except...he wasn't. Her perfect husband wouldn't be so moody and ill-mannered, and while Phillip was certainly handsome, he was a large brute of a man, rough and rugged, and totally unlike the London gentlemen vying for her hand. But when he smiled...and when he kissed her...the rest of the world simply fell away, and she couldn't help but wonder...could this imperfect man be perfect for her?

Him: Tall, hunky, handsome -- Her: fiesty, beautiful, understanding

What did you like best about this story?

Synopsis: Sir Phillip Crane, 30 years old, has recently lost his wife of 8 years to severe, chronic depression. In those days they called it melancholy. His wife attempts suicide by drowning in a near frozen lake and dies several days later. The Crane's have disrespectful and undisciplined 7 year old twins who have been left to the care of numerous nannies and nurses. Mrs. Crane's never married cousin Eloise, age 28, starts a kind letter conversation with Sir Phillip for 1 year following the mourning of his wife, whom he did not love.

Eloise shows up at his doorstep one evening, the children playing terrible pranks on her, Phillip yelling at them. The next day the only way Phillip can stop her mouth from talking incessantly is to kiss her! And the romance begins! Eloise a force to be reckoned with and just what Phillip and the children have needed so badly.

This story had me chuckling at Eloise and Phillip's banter numerous times, and laughing out loud while they were having an argument in the greenhouse when "her mouth was moving and no words came out." There are 2 scenes of sex and they were pretty hot!

It ends happy and satisfying, albeit a bit quick, I wanted the story to go on.

Any additional comments?

This is a good Austen Mr. Darcy & Elizabeth Bennett type story.

Probably my favorite Brudgerton book so far! I always appreciate the fact that Julia Quinn allows the characters to grow into the marriage and doesn't just end the story at, they got married and lived happily ever after.

Probably my favorite Brudgerton book so far!

What a relief to NOT have to suffer through another horrific man being portrayed as a love hero. Sir Phillip wasn’t a modern saint, but compared to the Bridgerton men, he was believable as a good/decent person. Getting to focus in on a Bridgerton woman was refreshing and fun. The performance was spectacular as always and the story and characters (especially the children) were great.

In the show on Netflix, we learn that Sir Phillip marries Marina to care for her unborn twins. The twins are those of his deceased brother, George. Is this mentioned in the book? Did I miss something?

Otherwise, I loved the book!

No mention of the twins not being Philip’s
