Scout Randall thought she had things well in hand. Then a loa landed in her lap and life exploded.
Baron Samedi does what he wants, when he wants. Right now he wants to learn as much as he can about the new pixie apex…and the lamia apex who is gunning for her. He doesn’t care who he annoys as he gathers his information.
Scout’s plan is to ignore him—after all, she has ghouls and random fires to deal with and he’s up to mischief one town over—but it becomes apparent quickly that the loa is in town for more than just a spying mission.
It seems Bonnie is no longer in danger of dying. She’s mastered her new reality and now she has a plan. If she can’t stop the inevitable big battle, she’s going to figure out a way to remove Scout from the equation altogether. If that happens, not only will Scout be gone, but nobody will remember her.
Scout wants to win but is she ready for the sort of battle that requires the ultimate sacrifice? She’s about to find out.
And it’s not going to be pretty.

It’s difficult to read about this full-grown adult, who never left her terrible two’s.
She is someone was such a bad attitude, low self-esteem, reactive to her RSD, pushing people away while at the same time expecting them to somehow find their way through her impossible expectations, and when they finally do she throws a tantrum and pretends that isn’t what she wants.
Scout literally makes it impossible to care about. And while I understand this point of view and I understand the feelings she has, anyone who grew up without parents/family who cares does not end up this way; they end up becoming people-pleasers because they want to be loved OR end up having trouble surviving in society and use a lot of drugs, alcohol, and people to get by. That’s just human psychology.
Her constant tantrums and expecting everybody to make her feel better while rejecting them when they do so.. and they STILL stick around and keep trying to build relationships with her… it’s just not the world we live in. You cant treat people like dirt and have them act like you’re adorable or amazing, and keep giving you passes while cresting your boundaries for you, regardless of whatever talents you possess. IYKYK.
If you’re SUPER hot, the best that can happen is you bounce from place to place until said hotness fails you.
That being said, omg it’s a relief that character is finally considering to begin to mature. It strikes me that anybody who believes this kind of personality can thrive comes from a place where they grew up in safety, with at least one person in their family who loved and look out for them regardless of their 5hitty attitude. Nobody who grew up without a family is gonna be this much of a turd and still be surrounded by people!
Ok whew. I’ve said my piece! I’m a dedicated reader so ima finish this series instead of abandoning ship. I thought her personality was funny and first, but now I see she is a toddler in a powerful pixie-witch body, which is really sad.
I hope this author moves into writing stories based from a woman in her “midlife”. I’ve followed her forever and would like to see the characters evolve along side of us humans who age. Otherwise the stories become irrelevant, which I think is the root of why I’m having such a hard time with Scout.
Sure, it’s a cute or interesting story.. but nobody really evolves in this series. It gets old.
