John Griffith London nació en San Francisco el 12 de enero de 1876. Hijo de un astrólogo ambulante, al que no conoció. Su madre era espiritista; se casó con John London unos meses después del nacimiento del niño, de quien el escritor tomó el apellido. Realizó estudios secundarios mientras trabajaba.
