Story49
A married couple, Fridolin and Albertine, are troubled by events and jealous of each other’s attentions the night before at a masquerade ball. Suddenly, Fridolin, a doctor, is summoned to the bedside of a dying man, an elderly councilor, whose daughter he finds attractive and vaguely sensual. So begins a series of involvements throughout the night in increasingly dangerous and deviant sexual adventures for Fridolin, who, taken by a friend to a “secret” party, is forced to make more choices that seemingly are beyond his control.

Story7

Story21
Stanley Kubrick, the great director, died only days after submitting the first cut of his film "Eyes Wide Shut" to Warner Brothers. The basis of his film is the novella Rhapsody: A Dream Novel, also known as Dream Story written in 1925 by the Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler. Interestingly, it was first published in installments in the magazine Die Dame (English: The Lady), the first illustrated magazine in Germany to cater to the interests of modern women. Which says a bit about the targeted audience of the author.

German short stories began in the late 18th century as brief, beautifully written moral fables. In the following century, style evolved toward realism in parallel with that of other European literature. From the lofty idealism of Goethe to the searing verisimilitude of Mann, German writers of all styles have left us some of the most arresting profiles of the human condition ever conceived.

Story0

Anatol, one of Arthur Schnitzler's earliest works, concerns the life of a shallow and immature playboy, who has multiple dalliances with various women but suffers from a crippling fear of commitment underneath his womanising facade. The play offers sharp social commentary on the themes of toxic masculinity and fidelity, and has been adapted in English to two different musicals: The Game of Love and The Gay Life.
