The elders had been predicting a cold snap for many weeks now, but nobody could have expected what was to happen next. In the town, the Englischers had their machines to clear roads, but the community just had shovels and each other. After prayers, the community left the prayer house to make their way home just as the snow began to fall. They all looked skyward, for the sky was a dull grey, laden with snow, and the flakes of snow seemed so large that the children ran around trying to catch them.

Eli lost his wife after just four years of blissful marriage and just two years after being blessed with a daughter, Sarah. He struggled to cope with the land and raising his daughter. The forest on the edge of the community was not often entered into by the community folk due to children telling stories of things going on that were not normal or safe. Miriam had long held desires over a young man in the village called Aaron who lived by himself after the recent passing of both parents. Miriam was trying to care for her elderly mother as well as make knitted goods to sell in the town for income. She was struggling to hold things together.
