The "Mary Celeste" (or Marie Celeste as it is wrongly referred to several writers) was a British merchant brigantine. The ship is best known for having been discovered on 5 December 1872 in the Atlantic Ocean, unmanned and apparently abandoned, although the weather was fine, the ship intact and her crew experienced and capable seamen. The "Mary Celeste" was in sound and seaworthy condition and was under full sail heading for the Strait of Gibraltar.

Percival Christopher Wren (1875 - 1941) was an English writer of adventure fiction mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. 'Presentiments' is the story of a legionnaire who knows he will be killed the following day but does not want to die without telling somebody about a set of terrible events which occurred in his childhood and which have overshadowed his life.

Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was an English author, born in one of the "Five Towns" which form the background of so many of his witty stories. When Professor Malpetant pays an unannounced visit to his sister, Muriel, he finds nobody at home. Both Muriel and her maid, Annie, have gone out, though he finds the door unlocked, and takes the opportunity to take a look around the house.

Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole (1884-1941) was a New Zealand-born English novelist and short-story writer. When Charlie Penwin arrives home with a dog, his wife is horrified. Mrs. Penwin agrees to keep the dog only if it is looked after by Blake, the wonderful, talented chauffeur whom she dislikes intensely. Blake and the dog take to each other instantly, but the presence of the dog upsets the equilibrium of the household. Mrs. Blake and Mrs. Penwin hate the dog, as does Mopsa, the family's Sealyham terrier.
