Die gute Fee Desiderata Hohlig stirbt und vermacht ihren Zauberstab der jungen Hexe Magrat Knoblauch. Damit verbunden ist der Auftrag, in die Stadt Gennua zu reisen. Dort soll Magrat verhindern, dass die junge Ella einen Prinzen heiratet. Auf keinen Fall, so Desiderata, soll sich Magrat begleiten lassen von den Hexen-Omas Esme Wetterwachs und Nanny Ogg. Diese beiden jedoch haben einen eigenen Kopf, und bald ziehen drei Besenreiterinnen gen Gennua, der Stadt von Voodoo und Mardi Grass, wo alle Märchen ein Eigenleben führen.

Der große monotheistische Gott Om hat ein Problem: Ihm sind die Gläubigen abhandengekommen. Und da im Götterhimmel weniger Gläubige auch weniger Macht bedeuten, findet sich der einst in Stiergestalt auftretende Gott plötzlich im Körper einer leicht lädierten einäugigen Schildkröte wieder. Zum Glück führt ihn das Schicksal zum Tempelgärtner Brutha, der zwar nicht der Hellste ist, aber immerhin Oms letzter wahrer Anhänger. Gemeinsam machen sich die beiden auf, Om wieder zu alter Macht zu verhelfen.

König Verence von Lancre und Königin Magrat feiern die Taufe ihrer Tochter. Alle sind eingeladen: leider auch Vampire aus Überwald, die sich sogleich an die Eroberung des Landes machen und die Bevölkerung in Blutspender verwandeln. Niemand kann helfen: Oma Wetterwachs scheint verschwunden zu sein, und Nanny Ogg, Agnes Nitt und Magrat können den Vampiren nichts anhaben. Aber zum Glück ist da Hilbert "Gelobt-sind-jene-die-Om-verehren" Himmelwärts: ein von Selbstzweifeln geplagter omnianischer Unterunterdekan, der Oma Wetterwachs wieder in Stellung bringt.

Eine zwielichtige Sekte mit dem Namen "Die aufgeklärten Brüder der völlig schwarzen Nacht" beschwört einen gewaltigen Drachen über Ankh Morpork herauf, der die Stadt in Schutt und Asche zu legen droht. Der Drache gerät außer Kontrolle, und nur die Stadtwache kann Ankh Morpork vor dem Untergang bewahren. Samuel Mumm und seine Männer haben alle Hände voll zu tun, bis von unvermuteter Seite Hilfe naht.
