"Captains Courageous" is an adventure novel. The book's title comes from the ballad "Mary Ambree", which starts, "When captains courageous, whom death could not daunt". Protagonist Harvey Cheyne, Jr., is the son of a wealthy railroad magnate and his wife, in San Diego, California. Washed overboard from a transatlantic steamship and rescued by fishermen off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Harvey can neither persuade them to take him quickly to port, nor convince them of his wealth.

It was seven o'clock on a very warm evening in the Seeonee hills when Father Wolf woke up from his day's rest, scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws, one after the other, to get rid of the sleepy feeling in their tips. Mother Wolf lay with her big gray nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing cubs, and the moon shone into the mouth of the cave where they all lived.

Many can't be authenticated as Masons, but are permitted to sit in lodge, based on partial examinations and an overall gut feeling. Artist Dick Heldar returns to 1890's England from the war in the Sudan after sustaining eye injuries and turns to painting for a living. While his realistic paintings of scenes from the war in Sudan slowly achieve a certain popularity, he ekes a living painting romanticized portraits. Eventually, the old war injury to his eyes starts getting worse and Heldar realizes he is going blind. Before he completely loses his sight, Dick resolves to paint his masterpiece, Melancholia, using a prostitute named Bessie as a model.

Kipling wrote only two science fiction stories, the first of which was "With the Night Mail"; both are set in his Aerial Board of Control universe and in the 21st century. The Aerial Board of Control is a fictional supranational organization created to manage air traffic for the whole world. The organisation was able to limit the influence of national states and create a de facto world government.
