Bauerngeschlechter werden nur in Kirchenbüchern verbucht: Das Kirchenbuch zu Krieglach, wie es heute vorliegt, beginnt im siebzehnten Jahrhundert mit dem Jahre 1672. Die früheren Urkunden sind wahrscheinlich bei den Einfällen der Ungarn und Türken zugrunde gegangen. Zu Beginn des Pfarrbuches gab es in der Pfarre schon Leute, die sich Roßegger schreiben ließen. Nach anderen Urkunden waren in jener Gegend schon um 1290 Rossecker vorhanden. Sie waren Bauern. Teils auch Amtmänner und Geistliche.

Trug eine ungebleichte Leinwandhose, eine Jacke aus grauem Wilfling (grobes Gewebe aus Schafwolle und Garn) und eine buntgestreifte Zipfelmütze. War barfuß und ungeschickt im Gehen und Laufen, jeden Tag trug ich eine andre Zehe in der Binde. Die Haare hatte ich mit den fünf Fingern vorn herabgekämmt, mit den Zähnen kaute ich an einem Grashalm.

Er war immer glatt und rein gescheuert, denn er wurde, wie die anderen Stubengeräte, jeden Samstag mit feinem Bachsand und einem Strohwisch abgerieben. So wie zu Weihnachten die Tannenbäumchen ihr Leben lassen müssen, so zu Fronleichnam die Birken.
