Although Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) is known mainly for his tales of the macabre and the supernatural, and is an acknowledged master of those genres, he thought of himself primarily as a poet. Here is a collection of over 30 of his poems, including two of the best known: "The Raven" and "Annabel Lee".

The Murders in the Rue Morgue was first published in 1841 in Graham's Magazine and is the first of three stories to center around Dupin, who here explains his theory of "ratiocination", where a precise, logical, and unemotional examination of the facts will lead to the solution of a mystery...no matter how bizarre the conclusion.

First published in an 1843 edition of The Pioneer, "The Tell-Tale Heart" is one of Poe's best-known stories. In it, an unreliable narrator is increasingly troubled by the clouded eye of the old man he lives with. Similar to "The Black Cat", "The Tell-Tale Heart" focuses on the effects of mental instability, crime, and guilt.

Tamerlane is a poem by Edgar Allan Poe that follows a fictionalized accounting of the life of a Turco-Mongol conqueror historically known as Tamerlane. The poem was first published in the 1827 collection Tamerlane and Other Poems. The poem's original version was 403 lines but trimmed down to 223 lines for its inclusion in Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems.
