This special edition of Oscar Wilde's "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" includes several original features. Three textually different versions of "The Ballad" are presented. One of these is the original shorter version of the poem, originally edited by Wilde's good friend, Robbie Ross, for vocal recitation. Wilde's early poem "Humanitad" is also included as it has striking stylistic parallels with "The Ballad" and reveals the continuity of Wilde's work over the duration of his career.

When he mentions friendship, a linnet flies down from a tree, and begins the story, intended to explain to the water-rat what true friendship is. Hans was a little man who owned a beautiful garden, where he grew flowers of all kinds and colours which were sold in the market to make some money.

Oscar Wilde (16 October 1854 - 30 November 1900) was an Irish poet and playwright. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of the most popular playwrights in London in the early 1890s. THE RISE OF HISTORICAL CRITICISM: This essay was written for the Chancellor's English Essay Prize at Oxford in 1879, the subject being 'Historical Criticism among the Ancients.' "The Nightingale and the Rose" A nightingale overhears a student complaining that the professor's daughter will not dance with him, as he is unable to give her a red rose; a lizard, a butterfly and a daisy laugh at the student for doing so. The nightingale visits all the rose-trees in the garden, and one of the roses tells her there is a way to produce a red rose, but only if the nightingale is prepared to sing the sweetest song for the rose all night with her heart pressing into a thorn, sacrificing her life.

"The Star-Child" is the story of an infant boy found abandoned in the woods by a poor woodcutter, who pities him and takes him in. He grows up to be exceedingly beautiful, but vain, cruel, and arrogant, believing himself to be the divine child of the stars. He lords over the other children, who follow him devotedly, and takes pleasure in torturing the forest animals and village beggars alike.
