Die Upanishaden sind die Quellentexte schlechthin für das Verständnis indischer Spiritualität – in ihrer Bedeutung vergleichbar der Bibel und dem Koran. Sie befassen sich ausschließlich mit wesentlichen Fragen nach Gott, der Seele, dem Ursprung und der Bestimmung des Menschen. Dies macht sie auch für moderne westliche Leser zu einer überaus lohnenden Lektüre.

"Auf den Flügeln der höchsten religiösen Begeisterung, welche hoch erhaben über alle äußeren Formen positiver Religionen, das ewige Wesen in der vollkommensten Abgezogenheit von allem Sinnlichen und Irdischen als den reinsten Quell ewigen Lichtes anbetet, schwingt sich Mevlānā Rumi über Zeit und Raum in die Unendlichkeit hinaus, wo er mit der unendlichen Liebe als unendlich Liebender in Eines verschmilzt …" So rühmt J. von Hammer-Purgastall 1818 Dschelāladdī Rūmī, der in Ost und West als der größte mystische Dichter des Islam gepriesen wird.

Es ist das größte Geschenk für einen Menschen, das Leben in der Großen Stille zu verbringen. Die Große Stille ist jenseits von sprechen und jenseits von schweigen. Die Große Stille ist jenseits der Welt und diesseits der Welt. Wenn wir ein Leben in der Großen Stille leben, dann sind wir nicht mehr in Stille, sondern Alles ist in dieser Stille. Das SHINJINMEI (chin. Xinxin Ming) ist der älteste überlieferte Zen-Text überhaupt. Er wurde im 6. Jhdt. verfasst von Meister Seng-Ts'an (chin.; jap. Sôsan), dem dritten großen Vorfahren der Zen-Linie nach Bodhidharma und Begründer des Chan in China (= jap. Zen). Die Weisheit dieses Textes ist über 1500 Jahre in der Zen-Tradition lebendig geblieben. Sie stammen aus dem Mahāvagga, dem ersten und zentralen Buch der alten Pali-Schriften. Predigt von Benares (Dhammacakkapavattana-Sutta): Dies ist die berühmte, im Tierpark bei Benares gehaltene Rede, mit welcher Buddha seine Lehrtätigkeit eröffnete.
