Tandis que Merry et Pippin rencontrent les fascinants Ents de la forêt de Fangorn, Aragorn, Gimli et Legolas affrontent les Orques et les Cavaliers du Rohan, avant de rencontrer un mystérieux cavalier blanc. Frodo et Sam, de leur côté, suivent Gollum le long des chemins périlleux qui mènent vers le royaume du Mordor, le seul lieu où l'Anneau pourrait être détruit.

Tandis que Gandalf affronte Sauron dans une lutte sans merci, c'est une guerre dévastatrice qui a lieu au pied de Minas Tirith, assiégée par des armées d'orques et de trolls. Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Merry et Pippin combattent avec l'énergie du désespoir pour défendre la cité blanche, et avec elle la Terre du milieu toute entière, face à l'invasion des forces des ténèbres.
