We are meeting for the purpose of getting a fuller understanding of the powers that are latent within us. Our prayers, our meditations, and all of our words, should tend to the one point in the lesson - strength. Remember, this is a school in which the Lord of the universe is the teacher. As students, we should demonstrate the lesson as we proceed. As students of truth, we know that there is one universal strength, "in you all, through you all and above you all," and that man expresses that strength. And let us be "instant," as Paul says, in our prayer for strength.

The world is changing its thought; in the past, those who believed in the perpetuation of youth were among the isolated few and were looked upon with suspicion by the many; in the present, the great majority desire to perpetuate their youth, and most believe it is possible.

Whoever lets loose a sunbeam in this world starts a benediction among men. Whoever sets a little lamp where its beam may shine on even a few feet of someone's path has done that which is worth while. God made the sunbeam, and the candle was lighted a great while ago; but if in my little book I can bring the light nearer to some who will be blessed and cheered by it, that will be enough.

Now, this is the sort of a man who is wanted everywhere, in every line of human activity: the man who can swim, the salesman who can swim, who can sell things, who can go out and get business, the man who can take a message to Garcia, who can bring back the order, the man who can "deliver the goods."

In the brief articles which will make up this series, my objective will be to present methods which have seemed to be conducive to increased mental efficiency in the shortest, plainest, and most practical manner.

Tonight's subject is: Pre-Existence. For every child born of woman, there is a son of God in the heavens, who is his ancestral Self. He is buried in you. He is the Reality of man. The Bible speaks of this son as Jesus Christ, the true identity of every child born of woman. God became man, that man may become God.

The theory presented in this book is new only in the sense that it has been revitalized of recent date. It is, in fact, as old as the world. Those who have seen the results of this theory in practice have called it miraculous. Others who have yet to see and learn and understand have called it fakery.

In entering upon this course of instruction, each of you should, so far as possible, lay aside, for the time being, all previous theories and beliefs. By so doing you will be saved the trouble of trying, all the way through the course, to put "new wine into old wineskins" (Lk. 5:37). If there is anything, as we proceed, which you do not understand or agree with, just let it lie passively in your mind until you have listened to the entire book, for many statements that would at first arouse antagonism and discussion will be clear and easily accepted a little farther on.

Talking to oneself is a habit in which everyone indulges. We could no more stop talking to ourselves than we could stop eating and drinking. All we can do is control the nature and the direction of our inner conversations. Most of us are totally unaware of the fact that our inner conversations are the causes of the circumstance of our life.

When the Hebrew Singer—marveling at the fact, of which he had no doubt, that man is visited by God—exclaimed, "When I consider Thy Heavens," he was undoubtedly comparing the apparent littleness of man with the vastness of the universe of which he was conscious of. For him, the expression "Thy heavens" included the universe whose existence was demonstrated by the "moon and the stars." Evidently, it was like a song composed at night. Like all inspired expressions, it was inclusive. But how much it included, the Singer certainly did not know.

Students of divine science rejoice in the all-inclusiveness of this teaching. Nothing is excluded; all is to be understood and interpreted aright. An omnipresent god does not confine the revelation of himself to any one channel, but he flows into expression wherever he is given the right of way. Therefore, every ardent and persistent seeker discovers truth, and as a result, contributes something toward the well-being of mankind.

The belief in thought-transference prevailed from time immemorial. Passing over the legendary tales, and coming down to the time of recent history, we see many instances of the acceptance of this idea by the people of that old land of the strange and mysterious.

We are told that because of an act of disobedience, man fell, thereby separating himself from God. But scripture tells us that God consigned all men to disobedience that he may have mercy upon them. So we see: the fall was a deliberate act, a plan for expansion, for greater existence, and an ultimate birth. Scholars consider the 82nd psalm as one of the most difficult of all the psalms to interpret, stating that although the idea may be perennial, its meaning has vanished.

What man is, and what man does, determines in what conditions, circumstances, and environments he shall be placed. And since man can change both himself and his actions, he can determine what his fate is to be. To change himself, man must change his thought, because man is as he thinks; and to change his actions, he must change the purpose of his life, because every action is consciously or unconsciously inspired by the purpose held in view.

Today, I am going to talk about enthusiasm and how it makes all of life a joyous experience. Every normal person wishes to be well, happy and successful and there is nothing wrong with this. Sometimes we think that perhaps life withholds these good things from us, as though it didn't wish us to enter into the joy of living. And yet, Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

Man's three greatest needs are: to feel that he is needed, wanted and loved; to feel that he belongs to the universe in which he lives, and to have an object or objects upon which to lavish his affection. It is now known that most unhappiness comes from a sense of being rejected; of not being wanted, needed and loved. It is also known that a large percent of our physical troubles is a direct result of emotional congestions that follow in the wake of feeling that we don't belong to life.

God's almighty power and wisdom expresses itself most characteristically in the acceptance of what the world calls weakness or foolishness. Matthew tells the story of one who - knowing himself to be the personification of God's creative power and wisdom - questions himself.

Tonight’s subject is There Is No Other God. You find this in the First Commandment in the book of Exodus, the 20th chapter. “I am the Lord your God, who have brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:2), followed by the Second: “Make no image, whether on earth, the heavens, or below the sea.” (Exodus 20:4)
