In 1923, journalist and budding fiction writer Ernest Hemingway penned 18 original short stories and published them in the magazine The Little Review with the help of his friend Ezra Pound. Hemingway would later add to this collection and re-publish the stories in 1925 under the same title and—after adding an additional story—would again republish the entire volume in 1930, again as in our time (all in lower case). This collection of short stories would mark one of the most auspicious and earth-shattering debuts by an author in literary history.

First published in 1927, Men Without Women represents some of Hemingway's most important and compelling early writing. In these fourteen stories, Hemingway begins to examine the themes that would occupy his later works: the casualties of war, the often-uneasy relationship between men and women, sport and sportsmanship. Pared down, gritty, and subtly expressive, these stories show the young Hemingway emerging as America's finest writer.

As I listened to this, I couldn't help but compare Buggs and Ad to George and Lennie in Steinbeck's Mice and Men. Buggs protects Ad as George protected Lennie. Ad, though diminutive in size, as a former professional boxer could be as dangerous as Lennie when he had a crazy spell. Hemmingway portrays Buggs as the true leader of the group, highly intelligent, articulate, and gentle to his companion Ad while leading Ad to believe he is in charge.

Presented here is the expanded 1925 edition of this seminal novel. This collection of short stories would mark one of the most auspicious and earth-shattering debuts by an author in literary history and also introduced the world to the fictional character of Nick Adams, a protagonist Hemingway would revisit repeatedly in his career. Within a few years, Hemingway would become known as one of the most important voices of his generation and his stark prose—lean and brutal at times—would be imitated by generations of writers who followed him.

This 1923 In Our Time collection consists of 18 vignettes. Five center on World War I (Chapters 1, 4, 5, 7, 8), and six on bullfighting (Chapters 2 and 12 to 16); the others center around news stories. Chapter 10 is the longest; it details a soldier's affair with a Red Cross nurse, and is based on Hemingway's relationship with Agnes von Kurowsky. The piece about a robbery and murder in Kansas City originated in a newspaper story Hemingway covered as a cub reporter at The Kansas City Star; it is followed by the story of the public hanging of a Chicago mobster.
