Shirley è un “romanzo sociale” del 1849 pubblicato dopo il primo fortunato romanzo della stessa autrice, Jane Eyre (che peraltro era stato pubblicato, come questo, sotto lo pseudonimo di Currer Bell). Il romanzo è ambientato nello Yorkshire negli anni 1811-1812 e tratta della depressine industriale dovuta alla guerra Napoleonica, con la conseguente reazione operaia sfociante nel luddismo.

Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of its eponymous heroine, including her growth to adulthood and her love for Mr. Rochester, the Byronic master of Thornfield Hall. Jane spent her childhood living with her uncle and aunt at Gateshead Hall, where she was emotionally and physically abused by her aunt and cousins.

This somewhat autobiographical novel is based loosely on Charlotte's love for Professor Heger in Brussels and is a forerunner to Villette. Young William Crimsworth is hired by the headmistress of a girl's boarding school. Eventually, he appears to be falling in love with her. She asks him to help tutor Frances, a young teacher. Complications ensue.

Infatti in entrambi questi romanzi l'autrice attinge alla sua esperienza di istitutrice in Belgio, in cui, ventiseienne, visse una storia d'amore con un suo professore. "Il professore" fu rifiutato dall'editore.

The Search After Hapiness was written by Charlotte Brontë when she was 13 years old. It tells the story of a man named Henry O'Donell who leaves his home to seek happiness only to find many years later that it was there all along.

Unpublished at the time of her death, The Professor is the first novel written by Charlotte Brontë, and the seed of her later books, Jane Eyre and Villette. The narrator of the tale, William Crimsworth, tells a story of courage and ambition among jealousy and envy: Orphaned from a young age, William rejects life in the clergy, and then as a tradesman, to the chagrin of his cruel uncles and elder brother. Instead he pursues a career in education and ends up in Brussels where he meets student/teacher Francis Evans Henri, with whom he falls in love.
