The crew of the USCS Tempest may have escaped near-death near the Excel Nebula, but their journey is just beginning. As Caspian tries to find his place among the crew on their journey to unknown space, Evie is haunted by ghosts of her past. Both of them will have to work together if they want to find out what's going on with the threat known only as Andromeda. The entire crew will be tested as Andromeda pulls them to the brink of destruction, and it will be up to Cas and Evie to keep them from plunging over the edge.

On the edge of known space, something disturbing is amassing. Reports from the Sovereign Coalition’s largest telescopes show a swarm of ships thousands of light-years away. The threat is real, and it looks like it’s headed for the inner Coalition planets. The people of the Coalition have little more than a year if they’re lucky. While the Admiralty scrambles to come up with a solution, there is one person who might be able to help: Caspian Robeaux.

Evelyn Diazal, once a respected commander and former captain of the ship, learns her past is even more mysterious than she could have ever imagined. A trip back to her home planet reveals long-lost connections and ignites a new conflict with former allies. Betrayed and left to rot on the edges of the galaxy, Caspian Robeaux is deep in debt and stuck flying courier missions in an old rustbucket he can barely keep afloat. Things start to look up, though, when a stranger arrives and offers a lucrative job that Cas can’t refuse, with a payday big enough to change his fortunes permanently. His luck gets even better when Cas learns that the job might offer him the one thing he wants more than his next drink: A chance to clear his name.

Distraught over the loss of his crewmates, Caspian Robeaux no longer believes he can pretend to be part of the crew of the USCS Tempest. He has to face the fact he’s become an outsider and that’s who he’ll always be. He has no place on a Coalition starship anymore. But the mission must continue and until it’s complete, he’s stuck on board. Will he find a way to cope, or will the ghosts of his mistakes drive him mad first?

In the far-flung future, an unknown alien species appears, determined to wipe out humanity. The Solar Union, in making a last-ditch effort to save billions of lives on dozens of different planets, retrieves the soldiers they need from those who’ve died over the past six hundred years.

Upon returning from the alien planet, the remaining crew of the USCS Tempest never could have anticipated this: Their ship is in impeccable condition, almost like it never left space dock. Due to a unique distortion in the planet’s atmosphere, Cas, Evie, and the rest of the crew who visited the planet missed the last 18 years of history. But just because those who stayed aboard had time to repair the ship, doesn’t mean all is good. The truth of what happened in those 18 years may be more than any of them are ready to handle.
