Dev is a football player at Forester University, a small liberal arts college where he and his teammates get to strut around and have their pick of the girls on Friday nights. That's as good as it gets - until he meets Lee, a fox with a quick wit and an attractive body.

Problem is, Lee's not a girl. He's a gay fox, an activist who never dreamed he'd fall for a football player. As their attraction deepens into romance, it's hard enough for them to handle each other, let alone their inquisitive friends, family, and co-workers. And if school is bad, the hyper- masculine world of professional sports that awaits Dev after graduation will be a hundred times worse.

Going it alone would make everything easier. If only they could stop fighting long enough to break up.

Kyell Gold's fourth novel is a story of relationships, of finding oneself and learning to live with someone else, set in the contemporary fantasy world that was the setting for his acclaimed novel Waterways: joint Winner of the 2009 Rainbow Award for Best Gay Novel; Winner of the 2009 Ursa Major Award for Best Novel.

very good story, typical gay for you jock story but with heart and very good characters. the one issue was the narration having some weird pauses and strange pacing where he ran out if breath.(as well as being unable to pronounce Penelope)

despite audio hiccups, good listen.

When I start reading a book, I either get bored before the end of chapter 1, or I get swept up with in the adventure, the emotion, and the expectations. This was a headbanging ride of the latter, the first time in my life I was genuinely shivering with anticipation, and it was warm in my bedroom *wink*

First audiobook ever, and its a roller coaster

I really loved this book. Kyell's writing is excellent and Sewell's narration improves throughout the novel and despite stumbling a few times early on and a few name mispronunciations he turns out to be quite good by the end. I also appreciate his not balking at the story's explicit nature. The novel itself doesn't require you to know anything about or to like football, and despite me falling into the latter category I still found the football scenes and setting very enjoyable, particularly when weaved in as action sequences.

There is a lot of allegory that the premise lends itself to and the novel is a vivid snapshot of a time in the very recent past when being a member of the LGBTQ+ community was met with open hostility and bigotry more often than not. The character development of the two main characters is well-paced throughout the novel and though they make some of the same mistakes multiple times (such as ignoring phone calls to their own detriment) they feel believable given the character's circumstances and personalities.

The anthropomorphic aspect might be hard for non-furries to dig into, but not so hard you can't easily get lost in a suspension of disbelief thanks to Gold's excellent writing. All in all I loved this novel and can't wait to dig into the sequels. 5/5 stars

Fantastic Novel

It’s surprisingly not that bad of novel. Although it’s the same “characters don’t talk to each other enough” plot.

Solid first book

When I first started listening to this audio book I remember when I first read the book 5 years ago. Looking for an escape I originally started reading to enjoy something that was full of emotion and passion. What I realize now is that a lot of the feelings portrayed by the characters are things that, previously, I could only imagine. The entire book shows that if you really want something and care about it, even if its hard you can persevere and bring it into fruition.

Hardships can lead to wonderful possibilities
