Bodyguard. Mage. Princess. Spy.

The Five Thrones have always been at peace, but rumors have begun to grow. Whispers of armies, of unrest, and of a masked knight murdering mages in cold blood.

To determine the truth of these rumors, a simple bodyguard must become a spy, and test her skills against an sinister assassin while staying one step ahead of a rival king…

While a sheltered princess must accept an arranged marriage with an enigmatic prince who wants nothing to do with her…

They’ve sworn to sacrifice their lives to save their kingdoms, but even that may not be enough. Now, it is only through magic and subterfuge that war can be avoided, and only if they’re willing to risk a far different fate than they ever imagined…

Falling for the enemy.

The plot was fairly interesting, and there was definitely enough storyline and world building to keep my attention (though sometimes I wished there was a little more of it). There are a few cliches or moments where a scene might be over-done/dramatic, but honestly even so all 6 books are enjoyable. I liked that there was an overarching plot that carried across all the books, and each couple gets a HEA in a way that doesn’t feel too forced. They are a little sappy, but in a good way. The chapters always alternate between characters, which takes a little getting used to, and there are definitely a few little cliffhangers in there but only for a chapter or so at a time.

The burn is s l o w, though, so if you don’t enjoy occasionally yelling at your book in frustration it may not be for you.

Pretty much zero spice (some kissing here and there), which honestly was refreshing and really brought out the sweet interactions and emotions between couples.

The VA does a good job overall, and tries very hard to give each character their own voice, but there are a lot of plot-relevant characters who make regular appearances and some of them do blend together a little bit because there are so many to juggle and create variety for. I probably couldn’t do it better so it’s more of a nitpick. Aside from that I didn’t really have complaints about the performance.

Clean slow-burn romance
