Deacon Slater was my high school crush—the bad boy with haunted eyes that made my heart skip a beat. But in our small town, the Slater name is synonymous with trouble, and Deke lived up to it when he landed in prison a few years after graduation.

He served his time and now he’s back, living in the apartment above mine, covered in ink and even more intriguing than before.

As the owner of Sugar Rush bakery, I’m used to building bridges with my muffins and cookies. I’ve seen cowboys nearly come to blows over the last lemon bar. But Deke wants nothing to do with my treats…or me. He keeps his distance, barely speaking when I knock on his door.

Until the day he doesn’t have a choice.

He’s there when I need him, stepping in to protect me, showing me the caring man beneath his rough edges.

We couldn’t be more different. I’m a curvy ray of sunshine in a pink apron and he’s a stoic, tattooed carpenter in work boots. But the more walls we tear down, the closer we get. And piece by piece, we discover how well we fit.

But when darkness from his past comes looking for him, what we’re building could all fall apart. Because this time, trouble isn’t just circling Deacon Slater.

It’s coming for us both.

(This is Phoebe Kelly's story and can be listened to as a complete standalone!)

This book leaves you wanting more of them. They have known each other since high school but were never friends, and years later their paths cross again. Their love story is full of heartbreak and deep devotion. It is a slow burn, but once it sparks, hang on. And the way they sleep together… woozers, I loved every minute of it!

If you haven’t picked up Hold the Line by Hold the Line yet, what is it you are waiting for? So Julia Wolf is a new to me author and what an intro to her work?!? WOW! I genuinely loved this one.

Let’s start with the main characters, because they completely carried this story for me. Deacon (our MMC) has so much grit, it’s the kind that isn’t just told to you, but shown in every decision he makes. You feel how hard he’s had to fight to become who he is. His journey, especially with how childhood trauma lingers and how difficult it is to break away from toxic family ties, felt raw and real. Honestly, the only thing I wish? Maybe a hint of him going to therapy, even in the background, just to show that step forward. But even without that, his growth felt earned.

And Phoebe… I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually loved the FMC. Like, actually loved her, she was relatable and like reading about one of my girlfriends… so, relatable (even though she was one of the haves in the small town Wyoming). She wasn’t the typical annoying immature, selfish, or making ridiculous choices thinking they were smart oh and the no self preservation thing irks me to no end… none of that was present here…. She had emotional intelligence, compassion, and a strong sense of self. The author didn’t just tell us she was a good person, we saw it in how she showed up for Deacon and for the people around her. She was supportive in a way that felt genuine (okay, maybe a tiny bit Pollyanna at times, but it worked).

What really stood out to me was how normal everything felt in the best way. These are people who go to work (I’m over the billionaire trope), who struggle to get out of bed, who think about playing hooky but go anyway (just like us 😆😆). That grounded, everyday realism made the story hit even harder. And Phoebe’s family? Just… wow. Supportive, loving, and actually functional in a way that felt refreshing. They wanted the best for each other, and you could feel that warmth.

The emotional range in this book got me, I laughed, I teared up, and I was fully invested the whole time. It’s not super high on the spice scale (I’d call it about a 2/5 at best), but honestly, that somehow worked for the story being told. The emotional connection carried everything.

Also, quick side note, can we talk about Sean Masters as the narrator? Because that voice?? Absolutely unreal. Smooth, deep, and completely addictive. I genuinely would not have complained if he had more chapters, just saying.

If I had any “complaint,” it’s basically that I wish I could experience this book again for the first time. That’s the kind of read it was for me.

Highly recommend if you’re looking for something emotional, character-driven, and grounded with just enough romance to keep your heart fully invested.

WOW! Best book so far this year…

This was a story about neighbors that were once high school crushes. Their reconnection was effortless. Deacon went to prison after getting caught in family business. She owns a bakery and is just pure sunshine. Like, super forgiving and always honest sunshine. I freaking love Sean Masters but there was just a disconnect with this main character for me. I feel like this book/narration choice wanted the MMC to be a big burly older hardened criminal…….. but that did not fit the text.

Sweet…. Really sweet

I highly recommend this story to anyone who wants to feel good. Loved it so much. Will be buying a physical copy to keep on my shelf and re-read at some point.

Sweet and wholesome and one of my absolute favorites!

This is one of my favorites by Julia Wolf. The FMC is a total Sunshine while the MMC is thought to be a full on Bad Boy but in reality... things aren't what they seem to be. if you love a romance featuring a plus-sized female finding the love she deserves...you will live this story, just like I did. Oh and the male narrator's voice mad me want Dek for myself. So good.
