It’s 1968, and Cathryn Vogeley is 18, unmarried, and pregnant. With a wedding no longer an option, she decides to put her baby girl up for adoption and never think about it again. Her decision shapes the rest of her life.

For decades, Cathryn allows this choice to define her value as a woman, a wife, and a mother. In every relationship, in every hobby, she searches for something or someone to soothe the constant ache in her chest created by the loss of her infant daughter. Cathryn’s search for healing reveals that her grief is not only for the child she gave up, but the childhood she lost.

This beautifully written memoir tells the haunting story of a woman who spends almost 50 years overcoming the consequences of one decision in order to find forgiveness, understanding, and peace.

Cathryn’s story is relatable to so many women. I know of others who have secretly carried the pain of adopting their children, and this story and epilogue help others to realize they are not alone. “I need to tell you” kept me up way past my bedtime too many nights— I could not wait to find out what happened next.

Engaging heartfelt well written story

This is a wonderful, heart breaking, story of pregnancy, adoption and the church. The love and loss that comes with adoption is beautifully communicated.

This book was one of the best things I’ve read. I’m not just saying that. I’m not that kind of person. I couldn’t put it down. It was so well written. I felt like I was right there with the narrator the whole time. I cried twice.

Beautifully written and wonderful narration!

This was very personal to me since I went to nursing school with the author and I knew her secret but never thought that she was a terrible mother or person. She did what she had to do in the times that we lived. I commend her for her courage in writing this very emotional story and hope that she can forgive herself and move on with her life. It was a very emotional read but well worth it
