King Stephen's bloody siege against the town of Shrewsbury has reduced many of its stores and homes to rubble. The townspeople, busy preparing for the annual St. Peter's Fair, complain that the Shrewsbury monks have not shouldered their fair share of the burden. Cadfael, hoping to assuage flaring tempers, is drawn into a worse kind of violence on the eve of the festival.©1981 Ellis Peters (P)1992 Recorded Books, LLC Mystery Historical Thriller & Suspense

With a great climax what a fantastic ride. I immediately started this one over again right after I finished it. I can't wait for the next one.

What a great story, masterfully read.

a fun listen if a little over long. not as complex as the two prior mysteries but the backdrop and the characters are always engaging. plot takes a while to develop and by the end the denouement is not very surprising. narration is first rate.

enjoyable if unmemorable

Cadfael, like the mounties, always gets his man or woman or priest. Everything is fine in the end.

Always a good read or listen.

A little more complex than some of the previous ones, which was a nice surprise. Masterfully written.

Another excellent performance
