Diana Donovan was raised aboard a naval ship on a steady diet of war strategy, so when her orphaned friend, Lucy, is denied a perfectly respectable love match by her controlling guardian, Diana sees an opportunity to put her battle knowledge to use in service of a deserving friend. But Marmaduke Russell is not the middle-aged curmudgeon Diana is expecting. He is a maddeningly cool unmarried gentleman who seems uniquely able to parry her tactics—and infuse her with even more determination to win. As battle ensues, though, it becomes clear that there may be more hearts in the balance than just Lucy's.

The Art of Victory is the first in Martha Keyes's The Donovans regency-set romance series. Each book can be treated as a standalone.

A great book

Loved the romance between Diana and Duke. It is a “sweet” Regency, no bodice-ripping. Unlike a lot of these traditional stories, the author does a wonderful job with the leading characters. Some good twists and a few laughs. Excellent narrator, too.

A Very Enjoyable Traditional Regency

The characters were well developed and interesting. The story did indeed stand alone as well as collaborated with the other story I read! Good stuff!

Really enjoyed this book. The narrator is superb and the story was different and funny. The characters are very likable and interesting. Definitely worth a read/listen.

Sweet and Funny

The narration is excellent. There are a few funny moments between the H/h. Otherwise, the plot was very simple, which meant it became a little thin and long. There was nothing wrong with the book, but it was very light reading. Duke was my favorite character, Valentine perhaps a second best toward the end.
