The Uncanny is the story of Richard Storm, a producer of horror movies. He comes to England searching for the real counterpart of the ghosts that have made him rich. At a party he reads aloud the classic British ghost story which inspired his Hollywood career, and suddenly, uncannily, starts a chain of actions that literally brings to life his first horror movie.

Harper Albright is a hunter, a rider of the tide of the Uncanny, whose credo is simply, "Believe nothing." Once young and beautiful, she has devoted her life to seeking out and destroying the evil Iago, her former lover, now the hunter of their son. Harper must destroy Iago before he can find all the clues to recreate the Philosopher's Stone, which will give him immortality at the cost of his son's life.

With Richard's reading at the party, Iago's trail suddenly grows hot. A trail of ghost stories stretching from Storm's films back to the Middle Ages provide the clues which will lead to Iago.

it was pretty good, very poetic writing so it was hard to understand sometimes. not too bad though

good book but hard to follow

It’s a British paranormal- ghost story, imbedded in a love story, rolled up in a murder mystery, and eaten by a historical-suspense novel!

It’s kind of difficult to follow at times.

Is there a fiction-genre Klavan can’t do well?

A fun and somewhat spooky story where stories and real life intermingle. It was clearly an allegory about abortion as well.

Excellent

This book is yet another great mystery from Klavan, who is definitely a master of his craft. This really is one of his better novels. You never know what may be haunting around the corner, and the twists in the story will keep you guessing. The characters are unique and carry this eerie story through to its riveting conclusion.

A thrilling mystery with spooky subtext

Once I realized it was a satire, I found it delicious. At the very beginning, I thought this is dreadful, I wasted a credit. Then I got it, and the overly dramatic narration made sense. I read a lot in this genre and it's great to find a unique twist in a ghost story. It's one of those books that I don't want to end.

Delightful
