LaVyrle Spencer
New York Times bestselling author LaVyrle Spencer presents one of her most beautiful and captivating novels—a powerful story of the human heart you will never forget . . .
Five long years ago, Laura Dalton stood on the bleak Nantucket shore waiting for her beloved husband Rye to return—until the day she learned his ship was lost at sea. Now, Laura's lonely heart has found solace in Dan, Rye's closest friend.
Dan has been a beacon of light in her time of darkness, becoming a father to the child that Rye never knew and giving her a reason to live again. But who could foretell that a wind-roughened sailor with sun-bleached hair would come back into their lives? That Laura's heart could betray her soul? That Rye would come home again . . .

What makes this book stand out is how masterfully LaVyrle Spencer handles human emotions. It’s not just a simple love triangle; it’s a messy, heartbreaking exploration of grief, loyalty, and the impossible choices we make when life takes an unexpected turn. You can’t help but feel for everyone involved—Laura, the wife caught in the middle; Rye, the husband who survived the unthinkable; and Dan, the friend who stepped in to pick up the pieces. The angst is real, and it feels so grounded in human nature rather than just being drama for drama’s sake.
The narration by Emily Sutton-Smith was solid. She has a way of conveying the yearning and the betrayal in the characters' voices that makes the historical setting feel very immediate and personal. It’s a bit of an "old school" romance vibe, but the themes of second chances and finding peace are timeless.
It’s definitely a 5-star read for me, though I’ll admit it’s a total emotional rollercoaster. If you enjoy historical romance that focuses more on the heart and the psyche than just the setting, you have to give this one a listen. Just be prepared for the feels!
