Why does our past pain continue to affect our present?

Though many of us can point to patterns of brokenness in our lives, we don’t know why they're there. No matter how hard we work, we can’t seem to outrun the very things that break our hearts. That's because our everyday setbacks are rooted in our unaddressed wounds.

In Why Am I Like This? seminary-trained, licensed trauma therapist Kobe Campbell helps us understand why it’s so hard to break these patterns as she offers us a deeper understanding of how our past shapes our present. With tender wisdom, rare vulnerability, and profound honesty, Kobe reminds each reader that they’re not alone, empowering them to step into healing with evidence-based, faith-filled coping skills and resources.

In Why Am I Like This?, you will:

  • gain an understanding of what trauma and healing really are,
  • explore the roots of your dysfunctional patterns,
  • learn how your trauma shows up in your everyday life, and
  • find trauma-informed, faith-based coping mechanisms to heal your mind and deepen your intimacy with God.

Kobe marries theological insight with therapeutic principles to give readers the tools and insights needed to begin their journey of restoration.

Reflection questions, checklists, and personal exercises are included in the audiobook companion PDF download.

Kobe’s book is the best I have encountered at blending the science of trauma and psychology with (Christian) spirituality and theology. So grateful to have these words in my life.

Refreshing approach

It wasn't until my second read/listen of this book that the lessons really hit and stuck. I think it was because I was "ready" and primed to go through the healing process. Going through the book and the accompanying questions had me crying, questioning, screaming, and so many other emotions that have been stuck inside waiting to be released so that I could experience the Holy Spirit. I am so appreciative of this book. While the negative thoughts may still be there, I now have tools to challenge them in a way that lets me know that I am loved. As I paraphrase the author, "My healing will look like God correcting the fractures of trust, confidence, self-esteem, creativity, spontaneity, joy and love in my life...". Thank you Kobe.

I’ll start by saying I am not a reader. But have browsed many self help books. This one I didn’t want to put down! I was fully invested and involved (taking notes etc) throughout the book. Never getting tired and always finding something new and enlightening in every chapter! I truly recommend this book to anyone struggling with mental health and wanting a deeper connection to God. I honestly believe this book has helped me more and quicker than a fave to face therapist. When the book ended, I felt like I was saying goodbye to a friend ! Wish Kobe had another book out!!!!

This is more than just another self help book. This book is like a therapy session in each chapter. It’s one of those books that read me. This is my 2nd go around and I’ll be doing the accompanied pdf this time around. I love when authors read their own books and this one doesn’t disappoint. You can here the sincerity of heart in every word.
It’s beautifully written and I’ve gifted a copy to my sister as well. My prayer is that many more will not only choose to read or listen to this book but take the deep end and go all in. It’s time to heal yal!!!!

Why Am I Like This? is a testament to what authentic living should look like - one that does the work to address the trauma in their lives then allows the Holy Spirit to comfort during the process.

While listening to the audiobook, I was struck at the precision the author took to describe trauma. Biblically, it was done in a way that I’d never heard before. I am forever changed!

I highly recommend this book as it should be required reading for anyone with breath in their body.

An amazing roadmap
