He made his film debut as a kidnap victim in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), but he's best known for his work with Mel Brooks in the films Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, and The Producers.

The fourth season of HBO's critically acclaimed series, The Sopranos, starts this Sunday, September 15, 2002. On this edition of Fresh Air, TV critic David Bianculli talks about the new season and host Terry Gross talks two of the show's actors, Steven Van Zandt and Edie Falco. Steve Van Zandt is the guitarist for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. He's also recorded solo and has produced a number of records for other bands.

Former Catholic priest Christopher Schiavone on this edition of Fresh Air. He talks about living as a closeted homosexual in the priesthood, finally having an affair with a man, going into therapy and then leaving the ministry. All this occurred by 1992, years before the sexual abuse scandal. Schiavone wrote about his experience in an article for the Boston Globe Magazine. (Broadcast Date: January 2, 2003)

Journalist Andrew Meldrum and journalist, lecturer, human rights activist Samantha Powers on this edition of Fresh Air. Andrew Meldrum was recently abducted and expelled from Zimbabwe by government authorities. He had been the Guardian's Zimbabwe correspondent, and was the last foreign journalist allowed to file from the country. Samantha Power was the founding executive director of the Harvard University Carr Center for Human Rights Policy.

Nuclear non-proliferation expert Joseph Cirincione on this edition of Fresh Air. He specializes in defense and proliferation issues at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He directs the Endowment's Non-Proliferation Project.

Comedian Mort Sahl on this edition of Fresh Air. Before The Onion, Weekend Update and The Daily Show, Sahl's shtick satirized the news of the day. It's the 50th anniversary of Sahl's first appearance at The Hungry Nightclub in San Francisco.

Singer and Hollywood legend Rosemary Clooney on this archive edition of Fresh Air. Clooney starred in the 1954 film White Christmas. She talks about her life as a singer and performer, and you can listen to songs from throughout her career. Her 1999 autobiography, Girl Singer, reads like a who's who from the Golden Age of Hollywood. She also released a CD companion to the book. Its called Songs from the Girl Singer.

Historian and civil rights activist Roger Wilkins and writer Vernor Vinge on this edition of Fresh Air. Wilkins has written a new book Jefferson's Pillow. He considers our founding fathers and their conflicting attitudes toward race and how it affects his own sense of patriotism. Wilkins is a professor of history at George Mason University, a Pulitzer-prize winner, and former Assistant Attorney General under President Johnson.

Voice and acting coach Patsy Rodenburg and New York City Police Detective Dave Fitzpatrick on this edition of Fresh Air. Patsy Rodenburg's worked with some of the world's leading English-speaking actors, including Judi Dench, Daniel Day-Lewis, Maggie Smith and Nicole Kidman. Rodenburg is the Director of Voice at London's National Theatre and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Novelist Mark Salzman and remembering jazz trombonist J.J. Johnson on this edition of Fresh Air. Mark Salzman is the author of the new novel, Lying Awake, about a cloistered nun who discovers that her spiritual visions may be induced by epilepsy.

British historian Charles Tripp on this edition of Fresh Air. Tripp is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Studies, at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. He's the author of A History of Iraq. Tripp talks about how Iraq became a nation, how Saddam became it's strongman, and what the U-S would likely face if it overthrows him.

Youssef M. Ibrahim, an expert on energy and the Middle East, talks about Iraqi oil on this edition of Fresh Air. Ibrahim is group editor at Energy Intelligence, a company that publishes news and provides data and analysis about international energy issues.

Writer Vernor Vinge and actor Steve Buscemi on this edition of Fresh Air. The author of 16 books of science fiction, Vernor Vinge gained a cult following for his early role in writing about cyber-culture and the Internet. His new book, Across Realtime, came out earlier this year. He talks about the difficulty of writing science fiction when technology outdates itself as rapidly as it does. Vinge teaches computer science at San Diego State.

Filmmaker John Waters on this edition of Fresh Air. John Waters's latest film is Cecil B. Demented about an underground filmmaker and his cult following who declare war on bad cinema by kidnapping a starlet and forcing her to star in their own film. Waters other movies include, Pecker about a young amateur photographer who becomes the darling of the New York art world; Cry Baby, a juvenile delinquent love story set in the 1950's, which brought together such performers as Patty Hearst, Johnny Depp, Ricki Lake, David Nelson, and Polly Bergen.

Writer/director Paul Schrader and remembering historian Stephen Ambrose on this edition of Fresh Air. Paul Schrader directed the new film Autofocus, about the life of actor Bob Crane. Schrader wrote the screenplays for a number of classic films, including Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. Films he directed include Affliction, The Comfort of Strangers and American Gigolo. Historian Stephen Ambrose died Sunday at the age of 66.

Author Phil Patton and singer Linda Thompson on this edition of Fresh Air. Phil Patton is the author of Bug: The Strange Mutations of the World's Most Famous Automobile. It's a cultural history of the Volkswagen Beetle, the most produced and best known car of all time. Patton writes for the New York Times, Esquire, Wired, and ID. He also wrote Dreamland: Travels inside the Secret World of Roswell and Area 51. Linda Thompson's back performing after a long hiatus.
