In October 1916, Conan Doyle announced in the journal light his conversion to spiritualism. During the last years of his life, he became the crusader of this movement that preaches salvation of humanity through science. Sherlock Holmes! The very name of the world's greatest detective conjures up images of Victorian London, gaslit streets, hansom cabs, and dense fogs. But there was a time, a dark three-year period, when London had to make do without Sherlock Holmes. From 1891 to 1894, he was presumed dead, having perished during the epic struggle with that infamous Napoleon of crime, Professor Moriarty, atop the Reichenbach Falls. But unknown to most, even his friend Dr. Watson, Holmes survived.

The Musgrave Ritual is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. The story was originally published in Strand Magazine in 1919, and was collected later in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Unlike the majority of Holmes stories, the main narrator is not Doctor Watson, but Sherlock Holmes himself. With Watson providing an introduction, the story within a story is a classic example of a frame tale. It is one of the earliest recorded cases investigated by Holmes, and establishes his problem solving skills.

Inspector Lestrade invites Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to help with a most disturbing case. Two veterans of the Second Afghan War have been murdered in their London apartments. The suspected perpetrator appears to be a Pashtun warrior tribesman decapitating his victims.

The adventure begins when Holmes and Watson are asked by Scotland Yard to step around to a house off Brixton Road. In the vacant house, the police have discovered a body: one Enoch J. Inspector Lestrade wants Holmes's opinion: "If this man was murdered," he asks, "how was it done?" "Poison," Holmes said curtly. "Come, Watson. The game is afoot."

Catherine Wynne's introduction reappraises the stories by looking at Conan Doyle's medical background and its influence on the creation of the famous detective.

To solve the mystery of the "speckled band", Holmes and Watson stake out Miss Stoner's room and make a momentous discovery. The eighth of the 12 stories collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Doyle considered it the best of the Holmes stories.

The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard is a series of comic short sorties by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle telling of the exploits of an uncomprehending French soldier during the Napoleonic Wars. Originally published in The Strand magazine between December 1894 and September 1903 the stories satirise both the stereotypical English view of the French, and - by presenting them from Gerard's baffled point of view - English manners and attitudes.
