Bluegrass musician Earl Scruggs originated the staccato three-finger, five-string banjo technique that became known as the "Scruggs style." He got his start playing with Bill Monroe's band in the 1940s and then teamed up with guitarist Lester Flatt (fronting The Foggy Mountain Boys).

Attorney Cass Sunstein on this edition of Fresh Air. Cass Sunsetin's considered by many to be one of the nation's authorities when it comes to interpreting the U.S. Constitution. He's the author of One Case at a Time: Judicial Minimalism on the Supreme Court, which came out last year. On this show, he explains the legal aspects of the election controversy in Florida.

NPR foreign correspondent Tom Gjelten on this archival edition of Fresh Air. Gjelten's book is Sarajevo Daily. During the height of the Serbian siege on Sarajevo the city was in ruins but one symbol of hope remained constant for its people, Oslobodjenje the city's multi-ethnic daily newspaper.

El-Sarraj is well known in the occupied territories and Israel as Gaza's first practicing psychiatrist, and for his efforts to foster co-existence between Arabs and Jews.

Writer Neil Baldwin on this edition of Fresh Air. Neil Baldwin is the author of the new book Henry Ford and the Jews: The Mass Production of Hate. In the book he details Ford's early obsession with moralistic writings condemning Jews for not accepting Christ. Shortly before World War I and continuing into the '30s, he wrote a series of venomous antisemitic essays in the newspaper The Dearborn Independent (which he owned).

Hear writer, editor, and speaker Peggy Orenstein, rock critic Ken Tucker, and book critic Maureen Corrigan, on this edition of Fresh Air. Peggy Orenstein has spoken about issues affecting girls and women in the past. She's also a contributing editor for The New York Times Magazine. Her article about the use of donor eggs for in vitro fertilization is in the Sunday, July 16th, edition of the magazine.

Director of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Liz Thompson and Film Forum Director Bruce Goldstein on this edition of Fresh Air. The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council brought art, dance, and performance to World Trade Center Plaza. They had offices in WTC building five; a number of their artists had studio space in tower one. One of their artists, sculptor Michael Richards, was killed in the attack. Liz Thompson was at a meeting in tower one when the attack took place.

Journalist Peter Maass on this edition of Fresh Air. In this week's New York Times Magazine cover story, Maass writes about Major John Nagl, a professor at West Point and a counterinsurgency expert who's putting his theories about counterinsurgency into practice for the first time. He's in Iraq with a tank battalion in the Sunni Triangle.

Writer and radio personality Garrison Keillor on this edition of Fresh Air. Garrison Keillor is the host and writer of A Prairie Home Companion, broadcast from Minnesota and heard weekly on public radio stations nationwide. Last year, Keillor published two new books. One is a semi-autobiographical novel, called Lake Wobegon Summer 1956. The other is in collaboration with photographer Richard Olsenius: In Search of Lake Wobegon.

Lyme Disease expert, Dr. Jonathan Edlow and chef Jeremiah Tower on this edition of Fresh Air. Dr. Jonathan Edlow is the author of the new book Bull's Eye: Unraveling the Medical Mystery of Lyme Disease. In the book he chronicles the emergence of the disease, how scattered clues led to the cause - bacterium Borelia burgdorferi, and then to the deer tick that spread it.

Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar and author Allen Kurzweil on this edition of Fresh Air. Amenabar's new film is a horror film called The Others, staring Nicole Kidman. It's his first English language feature. His first film, Tesis, won seven Goyas, the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars, in 1997. His second movie, Abre los Ojos (Open Your Eyes), has been remade in the US. The film, Vanilla Sky, was made by Cameron Crowe and stars Tom Cruise.

Rock musician Wayne Kramer and linguist Geoff Nunberg on this encore edition of Fresh Air. Guitarist, singer, songwriter Wayne Kramer founded the MC5, a Detroit band considered to be the prototype for punk rock, in the late 1960s. By 1972, the band had burned out. In between then and now, Kramer did time in jail for drugs, teamed up with Don and David Was to found the group Was (Not Was), and began a solo career.

Scottish writer/director/actor Peter Mullan and writer/director Niki Caro on this edition of Fresh Air. Peter Mullan's new feature film The Magdalene Sisters is based on the real life laundries run by the Sisters of the Magdalene Order in Ireland which opened near the end of the 19th century.

Actress Christine Baranski and garbage expert Benjamin Miller on this edition of Fresh Air. Baranski is probably best known for her work on the TV series Cybill, in which she played Maryann, the best friend of Cybill Shepherd. She's currently starring in the TV sitcom Welcome to New York. She also plays Martha May Whovier in the new film Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Musicians Joe Hunter and Jack Ashford on this edition of Fresh Air. Joe Hunter (keyboards) and Jack Ashford (vibes and tambourine) were part of the group of musicians known as the Funk Brothers, whose sound defined Motown in the 1960s and '70s. They worked with such legendary performers as Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, and many more.

Poet and memoirist Mary Karr on this edition of Fresh Air. In a follow-up to Liar's Club, what critics call "a hard scrabble childhood," Karr returns to East Texas to detail her adolescence in Cherry. The author relates anecdotes of rebellion, self-doubt, and sexual coming of age. The recipient of several literary awards such as the Pushcart Prize and the Bunting Award, she has published two volumes of poetry. She is the Peck Professor of English Literature at Syracuse University.

Journalist S.V. Date and literary forensics expert Don Foster on this edition of Fresh Air. S.V. Date is based in Florida where he is Tallahassee bureau chief for The Palm Beach Post. He discusses the recount in Florida for the presidential election. Date is also the author of the novel Smokeout. Named the first literary detective of all time, Don Foster uncovered the identity of Joe Klein as the Anonymous writer of 1996's Primary Colors.
