Terwijl Hamish dieper in het onderzoek duikt, ontdekt hij dat bijna elke vrouw in het dorp een motief had om Bartlett te vermoorden.

Sądziedzi nagle przestają służyć sąsiedzką pomocą – nikt nie chce pisnąć ani słówka. Sprytny Hamish musi delikatnie wyciągać z mieszkańców wsi całą prawdę.

Najbardziej znienawidzony mieszkaniec najbardziej ponurego miasta Szkocji pływa brzuchem do góry w zbiorniku pełnym skorupiaków. Gdy wszyscy martwią się, żeby na stoły najznakomitszych brytyjskich restauracji trafiły wyłącznie towarzyszące mu homary, na talerzu Hamisha Macbetha ląduje szyta grubymi nićmi afera. Tym razem będzie musiał uporać się z naczelnym inspektorem, który chce zatuszować sprawę morderstwa, z piękną dziewczyną, która usiłuje go uwieść, oraz z mordercą, który już szykuje kolejną ucztę.

Kiedy posterunkowy Hamish Macbeth otrzymuje wiadomość o morderstwie w domu bezlitosnego żartownisia Arthura Trenta, traktuje to jako jego kolejny kawał. Jednak na miejscu okazuje się, że Trent bez wątpienia został zamordowany. Na dodatek jego dom pełen jest chciwych krewnych, których bardziej interesuje treść testamentu Arthura niż znalezienie jego mordercy. Jakby tego było mało, okazuje się, że w sprawę zamieszana jest dawna miłość Hamisha, Priscilla Halburton-Smythe. Sytuacja się komplikuje.

Maggie Baird nie jest ani miła, ani uprzejma, ale za to jest bardzo bogata. Kiedy ginie w pożarze samochodu, Hamish ma aż pięciu kandydatów do roli mordercy – nieśmiałą krewną i czterech byłych kochanków Maggie, spośród których usiłowała wybrać sobie męża. Rzecz jasna, wszyscy mieli okazję, by majstrować przy aucie denatki. Odkrycie sprawcy będzie wymagało od Hamisha nadzwyczajnego sprytu.

Do pobliskiego miasteczka Drim przyjeżdża Peter Hynd, elegancki kawaler z niezłymi dochodami. Małomiasteczkowe panny natychmiast rozpoczynają rywalizację o względy arakcyjnego mężczyzny. Na początku ich niegroźne kłótnie są dla Hamisha Macbetha miłą rozrywką. Do czasu. Gdy pojawiają się groźby pozbawienia życia i pobicia, sytuacja staje się niepokojąca. Wreszcie dochodzi do morderstwa. Hamish musi na chwilę zapomnieć o przygotowaniach do ślubu z Priscillą Halburton-Smythe i skupić się na odnalezieniu zabójcy.
