"The World That Couldn't Be" is a sci-fi story by Clifford D. Simak, published in 1958. Our hero Duncan is a farm owner on an alien planet, very alien, in fact, since no one, absolutely no living creature or plant has sex, for instance... But that's not the least of Duncan's troubles, as some alien life form is attacking his crops, the hunt is on. And what a hunt!

The Defenders is a 1953 science fiction novel by American master of the genre Philip K. Dick, and the basis for Dick's 1964 novel "The Penultimate Truth". (It is one of several of his stories to be expanded into a novel)... Eight years ago a nuclear war began between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. American survivors evacuated to gigantic bunkers miles under ground. Sophisticated, radioactivity-immune robots called "leadys" continue fighting the war on the devastated surface.

"The Vortex Blaster" is a collection of three science fiction short stories by author E. E. Smith, published in 1960. The stories included are "The Vortex Blaster", "Storm Cloud on Deka" und "The Vortex Blaster Makes War", and they all bear the stamp of unmistakable quality to be expected from the old sci-fi specialist Smith! The hero of the collection is Neal "Storm" Cloud, a nuclear engineer with an amazingly mathematical mind.

"The Importance of Being Earnest" is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed in 1895 in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personæ to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. Contemporary reviews all praised the play's humor.

Author Daniel O'Connor took the story from the original world famous and beloved play, with the approval of its author, J. M. Barrie; and shortened it into a book with music and illustrations. This shorter book treatment was published before Barrie wrote the longer novel Peter and Wendy, using the same plot and characters. You just never can get enough of Peter Pan!

Lord Tedric was a smith (both blacksmith and whitesmith) residing in a small town near a castle in a situation approximately equivalent to England of the 1200s. He received instruction in advanced metallurgy from a time-traveler that wanted to change the situation in his own time by modifying certain events of the past. From this instruction he was able to build better suits of armor and help defeat the villains of the piece.

"A Book of Nonsense" is a volume of limericks by author Edward Lear, published in 1846. Containing over a hundred hilarious verses suitable for both children and non-children; the author was a key figure in popularizing the form! Here is a delightful sample: "There was a young fellow named Tate Who dined with his girl, at 8.08 But I'd hate to relate What that fellow named Tate And his tête-à-tête ate at 8.08."

"The Just So Stories" are a collection written by the world famous British author Rudyard Kipling, published in 1902. Highly fantasized origin stories, especially for differences among animals, they are among Kipling's best known works. "The Just So Stories" began as bedtime stories told to 'Effie' [Josephine, Kipling's child]; when the first three were published in a children's magazine, a year before her death, Kipling explained:... in the evening there were stories meant to put Effie to sleep.

"Personality Plus" is an early novel by American author Edna Ferber. Originally published in 1914, it chronicles the travels and events in the life of Emma McChesney. Ferber achieved her first successes with a series of stories centering on this character, a stylish and intelligent divorced mother who rises rapidly in business.

A 1960 sci-fi tale but also a pulp fiction and amusing fantasy story (the tale itself fluctuates between these styles) by master Murray Leinster. A gangster is controlling a town through violence and menace... until a dry cleaning establishment chips in for the good guys, resulting in very peculiar events to say the least!

"Hunter Patrol" is a 1959 sci-fi story co-authored by H. Beam Piper and John J. McGuire. A soldier travels into the future to kill a dictator. After completing the mission and returning home to his present time, he doesn't remember what he has done. With him he has an envelope with the formula for a fizzy drink that would make him able to conquer the whole world... possibly.

"Lady Windermere's Fan" is a four-act comedy by Oscar Wilde. The play was first published in 1893. Like many of Wilde's comedies, it bitingly satirizes the morals of society. The story concerns Lady Windermere, who suspects that her husband is having an affair with another woman. She confronts him with it but although he denies it, he invites the other woman, Mrs. Erlynne, to his wife's birthday ball... The best-known line of the play sums up the central theme.

"The Willows" is one of Blackwood's best-known works and has been influential on a number of later writers. Horror author H. P. Lovecraft considered it to be the finest supernatural tale in English literature. The work is an example of early modern horror and is connected within the literary tradition of weird fiction. Two friends are midway on a canoe trip down the Danube River.
