July 1833. Lady Darby and her husband, Sebastian Gage, are settling into their newly renovated home at Bevington Park in Warkwickshire with their daughter. With the breach between them and Sebastian's father healed, they've agreed to help host a country house party. Kiera is also anxious to help promote a match between her brother, Trevor, and the woman he's fallen in love with, inviting her family to join them. November 1920. Dublin, Ireland. Verity's efforts to foil a contemptible plot by the traitorous Lord Ardmore and save countless lives—as well as the British government's reputation—has exposed her to detrimental scrutiny, bringing her contact with the Irish rebels to light. She's thrilled when she receives an invitation to the auction of the late Lord Eldin's coveted art collection, and she and Gage eagerly accept. When the floor collapses beneath the gathering, killing one of their fellow bidders, Kiera and Gage are lucky to escape with their lives.

January 1832. After enjoying a delightful few weeks with her family, expectant mother Kiera and Sebastian Gage have been invited to the Duchess of Bowmont's Twelfth Night party in Traquair, Scotland. Though she normally avoids such fashionable, rambunctious events, Kiera is ready to join in the festive merrymaking. But upon their arrival at the opulent estate, it becomes obvious that all is not merry in their hostess's home.
