Fifteen years have passed since Jack and the gang had their happy ending, and in that fifteen years, things have changed. A lot. The District, an empire led by the blood thirsty one-eyed man, is rapidly expanding, the dead are still walking, and Jack Jupiter is trekking back east. Alone.

After the devastating events on Prism Lake, Grady and the other survivors head south, hoping to find safety in one of the rumored "Cities of Light". But as they embark on their journey, they quickly discover the monsters aren't the only things out in the snow they must fear.

After the initial series of summer blizzards, the snowfall has decreased, but the temperatures continue to drop, the icy wind still blows, and with each passing day, the darkness lasts longer and longer. It is in the darkness the monsters thrive. Confined to the lake house and having no communication with the outside world, Grady and the others live every day in fear, questioning what the future holds. Will the snow melt? Will the sun ever rise? Can the wraiths be defeated? But as the days turn to weeks, no answers come.

But Norm has been brainwashed into becoming the Overlord's second-in-command, and with every passing minute, the District grows stronger while our heroes grow weaker.

There, in the scorching hot wasteland, an organization known as Central works to cleanse the world of the zombie virus. But Central can't operate without Doc Klein. They need his superior intellect and tenacity. So Jack's mission is simple: Deliver Klein to their base unharmed. But the survivors don't know the entire story behind the cure, and someone in Jack's circle does. This secret could very well tear the family apart.

No one is safe. After narrowly escaping the onslaught at the radioactive prison city, Jack, Abby, and Lilly—now joined by three new companions—continue east to where it all started. Ohio.

On their third anniversary, young couple June and Carson take a weekend camping trip in the secluded Ohio woods to celebrate their love. The one they settle on is called "Jelly," and it's about a young college man returning home for holiday break. While there, he discovers a strange alien presence hiding in his childhood treehouse.
