Hannah Bloom dreams of the day she’ll have chased away all those doubts and worries that plague her and be free to call herself a poet. At every possible opportunity, Sam is on a bus heading west into the desert to search for the elusive grains of gold that would make any rock hunter’s heart go pitter-pat.

When Lydia Wickham is struck down in the middle of the day, everyone turns to her husband, George Wickham, for answers, but he has nothing to tell them. He has no idea what happened to his wife. Twin Station, run by these three partners, begins to return from the terrible fires that wiped out their southern paddocks. The thousands of sheep Carmen brought with her from Sydney helped to make up for their losses. Her incredible and much sought-after black horses thrive in this arid environment.

When Brie Thornberg-Selvidge shows up to said book club complaining about having a sleepless night, Avery Baldwin is concerned. A barking dog is to blame for Brie’s fatigue, so the ladies decide to sit up that night, listen for the dog, then contact the animal’s owner. Everything goes according to plan, right up to the point where the little dog and its owner glide through Brie’s backyard. Is that a ghost walking around Buenaventura Beach with a yapping doggy trotting by its side? Or is some prankster intentionally trying to ruin the quietude of the town?

Alinta is determined to make sure she never becomes a victim again, but what can she do when Mel’s previous love shows up at the outback station they are building together? The white woman, with her proper English ways, is like no one she has ever seen before. How can she compete with someone who once held her own love’s heart?
