Robur, a talented inventor, has completed a new machine, which he has dubbed the Terror. It is a ten-meter long vehicle, capable of functioning as a speedboat, submarine, automobile, or aircraft. It can travel at the (then) unheard of speed of 150 miles per hour on land and at more than 200 mph when flying.

The thorough description of the event comes from an insider's viewpoint, since the author served there as one of the two generals of the Confederate Army. "Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates" is a novel by Mary Mapes Dodge. Poor but hardworking 15-year-old Hans Brinker and his younger sister Gretel want to take part in December's great ice-skating race on the canal. They have little chance of doing well on their handmade wooden skates, but the prospect of the race and the prize of the silver skates motivate them and fuel their ambition. The story takes place in the Netherlands and is a vivid fictional portrait of early 19th century Dutch life, as well as a tale of youthful honor.

"Green Mansions: A Romance of the Tropical Forest" is a romantic story by William Henry Hudson. "Around the World in Eighty Days" is an adventure novel by Jules Verne. Phileas Fogg is a wealthy single British gentleman. Despite his fortune, he lives a simple life with his tendencies carried out with scientific accuracy. Fogg hires a Frenchman by the name of Jean Passepartout as his valet. At the Reform Club, he gets embroiled in a disagreement over a news article stating that it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He agrees to a bet of £20,000 from his fellow club members to carry out such a voyage within that time. A classic of adventurous travel fiction!

"Captains Courageous" is an adventure novel by Rudyard Kipling. We follow the escapades of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr., pampered son of a railway magnate. Harvey is saved from drowning by a Portuguese fisherman but can neither convince them to take him swiftly to port, nor assure them of his wealth. Disko Troop, captain of the boat We're Here, offers him temporary admission into the crew until they return to port. Eventually, he becomes accustomed to the fishing lifestyle and its rewards in comradeship. A fascinating read!

Floor Games by H. G. Wells is a children's book about games that can be played on the ground.
