An empowering guide to casual sex and hooking up from sex educator and Girl Sex 101 author Allison Moon.

A comprehensive and fun-to-listen guidebook for people of all sexual identities and experience levels, Getting It covers all the bases of hook-up culture from first moves and sex etiquette to navigating nonmonogamy and sexual health. In an era of endless crossed signals and heightened awareness of consent and respect, award-winning author and sex educator Allison Moon shows you how to achieve safe and enjoyable encounters by practicing clear communication and consideration of all parties involved--yourself included. Getting It helps you understand what casual sex means for you and offers an instructive and empowering deep dive into how to get it, do it well, and feel great about it every step of the way. And since we're all imperfect, Moon offers guidance for how to gracefully recover when you screw up--or get screwed over.

Refreshingly intersectional and respectful, Getting It is an honest guide to understanding the basics of hook-up culture and how to partake.

I’m 34 and I wish I had this book when I was a kid learning sex education. I probably wouldn’t have had so much shame and made the mistakes I made in my 20s.

This should be required in schools

For transparency, I didn't finish this book. I started it, jumped around to see if other chapters were more of what I was looking for and then returned it because it wasn't what I was looking for. I was hoping this book would help me expand some of my views on casual sex, maybe challenge some of my narratives around sex and intimacy, and also get my brain thinking as I'm in the process of collaborating around a relationship design. Unfortunately, I found this book to be really 101. A lot of parts I ended up listening to were definitely speaking directly to creepy cis-men in pick-up culture who don't understand consent and other parts just felt like they were upholding or encouraging societal norms (don't be too negative when you're talking to people, stuff like that). It felt like broad brush strokes over many topics and therefore felt really boring and unhelpful to me. Read this if you need some deprogramming from pick-up culture or are just starting to date for the first time ever and need some basic guidance?
