Ace Endicott, the Earl of Carde, needs a woman who will give him an heir, but he never expects to be engaged to three different women, or to become the laughingstock of the gossip columnists. Escaping this London nightmare, he takes a chance and comes up with a winning hand in the game of love.

Rita Award winner Barbara Metzger puts a tantalizing mix of humor and scandal into her Regency-era novels.

"A doyen of humorous Regency-era romance writing." ( Publishers Weekly)

Having never read this author, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was hoping for a Georgette Hayer type Regency Romance. Although, it is in that genre, it is not in the same league.
There is some humor, and a few fun characters; but it isn’t very clever.
The story is romantic and a little more sensual than Heyer or Jane Austin which actually detracted a little from the sweetness and authenticity of the story.
The Duke is more annoying than Rakish, but he has some funny moments. The real hero of the book is Nell, the innocent, sweet young woman who steals his heart. and gives the story its life.

It’s not Georgette Hayer or Jane Austin, but it’s light hearted in a little too modern romp style romance novel.

Kinda boring and stupid and arrogant but oblivious and judgy about the women in the story and hypocritical. But it was still better than most of the books I read as far as being simple and happy for everyone and funny and light. I would recommend it to anyone over 18 or so because although it has zero sex scenes or language or descriptive sexual talk it does speak about sexual anatomy and adult subjects are discussed in adult ways. Which, truth be told, is my favorite part of this author's work. They are adult books without the descriptive sexual activities and vulgarity and profanity.

Not my favorite... I just thought the hero was

This is definitely on of my favorite books by Barbara Metzger. I really wish the other two books in this trilogy were also available on audio-book.

The narrator did a fantastic job.

I have enjoyed the Barbara Metzger books which I only recently discovered. However this is perhaps my least favorite of them to date. The ending was awful!!! She must have decided it was long enough and out of the blue summed it up in three sentences by a voiceover. Poorly done.

The narrator was quite good.
The heat was non existent.
Creditworthy? I don't know.

Not my favorite.
