Madden

My best friend is uptight, gorgeous, the greatest person I know … and I might be a smidge in love with him. Just a small amount. Barely worth the mention.

Which is a stupid choice on my part when the guy is straight.

Starting a landscaping company with him was the perfect mix of doing what I love and an excuse to spend time with him, only it hasn’t completely taken off yet and now he’s telling me he’s lonely.

Lonely.

Apparently having one friend in your life isn’t enough.

So I’m determined to help him find love. With someone other than me. Maybe if I can pull that off, it’ll mean my heart will finally get the message and move on.

Or finish breaking into a hundred pieces.

Same thing, right?

Penn

Being besties with an overenthusiastic, gold-hearted, nudist of a man is a challenge sometimes. Madden makes everything sunshine when he’s around.

The problem is that he hasn’t been around as much lately. We work together, sure, but he’s got his roommates and I have … no one. Just him. So I feel the distance acutely.

My one reassurance is that we have work tying us together, but when an old client calls with a proposition for us, it feels like our once solid friendship is unraveling fast.

He wants Madden to help him open a nudist resort, and if Madden’s doing that, he won’t be working with me.

I’m trying not to panic over the thought of losing him, which is a typical, common best friend reaction. Nothing out of the ordinary.

And neither is the way my body has been reacting to him lately.

Everything is totally, completely normal between us.

While there’s still an us at all.

This story was probably my least favorite, but it was still good. Madden is so self centered, only doing what he wants and not caring how it affects others. Madden is supposedly in love with his BFF for years, but Penn really is taken for granted. I got no feelings of pining or longing from Madden, and Penn was left feeling out in the cold. Even at the end, both men were living Madden’s life, what Madden wanted. This found family always makes every story good, but Madden is my least favorite by far, because his trauma wasn’t his reality so much as his self centered mind set, and it left his character seeming to be far more with personality deficiency than neurodivergent or having PTSD like the other men in the house.

not the sort of book I would usually read since there's really not a whole lot of story. it's mostly a tale of self-awareness and young people figuring out where they fit in their lives and the lives of those around them. Teddy Hamilton does a great job of narrating as always.

I started the book 100% sympathetic to Madden. Being in love with the "straight" best friend has to suck. I lost that sympathy almost immediately. I don't understand how someone can claim to love someone without once compromising on ANYTHING. He literally waited to the last freaking chapter to get it. I'm glad Penn found new friends and stood up for himself. Even as just friends, Madden put everyone else first. Ugggh there are just so many things that I can't stand about that character. I loved the book

Beautiful narration

I have to say this was my least favorite of the series. Good writing and excellent narration by TH as always but somthing was off. I didn't feel the chemistry between them and became frustrated by the constant miscommunication between Penn and Madden. The book kept drilling the fact that they were best best friends and yet they ssmed like strangers at times. I love this series as a whole but for me this one was underwhelming

Another highly anticipated visit with the Bertha Boys that was everything I expected and more! This time the story featured Madden & Penn- a friends to lovers, bi- awakening, unrequited love, and of course our favorite found family of misfits. Both Penn and Madden go on a journey here, for themselves and to each other and I was here for every second of it.
