The Wizard Lord Drayfus is released from prison and starts on a campaign to enter the outerworld and capture some Elfins who have thus far eluded him. Using her "Sparkler" to save the accident victims has resulted in Millie coming from the Inner-world and taking back Zoie's sparkler, but she leaves her a magic ring for her protection.

Unexpected Adventures picks up two years after The Curse as 16 year old high school student Brittany Standish accompanies her cousins Makayla and Taya to Lake Powell for spring break. There is a serious accident on the highway and Brittany uses the magic sparkler she doesn't know she has. She rescues and restores life to a family. Shamus shows up to protect her and Robearus, brother of the Nenuphar soldier in book one, also shows up tracking the Elfin magic.

Meredith spent his entire life being angry with his mother for not documenting his ancestry. For leaving the home of his heritage and dragging him out across the country so that he lost touch with his family and his roots. He spent much of his life wondering if he had not just fallen from the sky one day. In a phone conversation with his elder sister Leah, she said, "Missouri? Why in the world would you want to go back to Missouri?" Without a thought, he answered. "I'm sixty-six years old and I want to go back because I want to be buried amongst my own kind."

Teenage Brittany Standish travels to spend the summer at her grandfather's farm, a property called Whispering Oaks. Unintentionally using "Ocular Sinister" while taking a nap, she captures and makes friends with the Elfin Guardian, Shamus. They are a leprechaun-like group of folks who possess great magic. Going to Torgilson's store, she is almost attacked by a large male African lion.
