South African writer, teacher, and pastor Andrew Murray spent his life trying to better understand the Christian faith and was author of roughly 250 texts, each one an insightful and in depth study of the bible and Christianity as a whole. In The Power of the Blood of Jesus, Murray takes a knowledgeable, detailed, and pious look at the significance of the blood of Jesus Christ, both in literal form in the Bible and as a universal symbolic cornerstone of Christianity of all denominations.

In this monograph, Freud describes the psychological mechanisms at work within mass movements. Freud had previously attributed most human behaviour to the sexual instinct (Eros or libido). The Praise of Folly is a hilarious satirical essay on various superstitions and irrational beliefs held by European society and the Roman Catholic Church at the time of Desiderius Erasmus. The narrator is Folly and her attendants include Philautia (Self Love), Kolakia (Flattery), Lethe (Forgetfulness), and Anoia (Imbecility).

In this essay, Carl Jung discusses an aspect of the work of the Swiss psychiatrist Paul Eugen Bleuler (1857-1939). Bleuler’s clinical analysis of "Negativism" in schizophrenia raised the concepts of "ambivalency" and "ambitendency", expressing the axiom that every tendency is balanced by its opposite. Jung argues that there is no such thing as a capricious playing with contrasts, and that the theory of negativism must adapt itself to the systematic character of resistance.

Kierkegaard was a fierce critic of the Hegelianism of his time and of what he viewed as the empty formalities of the Danish church. He denied Hegel’s insistence on logic within the realm of religion by stating that many doctrines of Christianity cannot be explained with rational thought. The Association Method was the first of three lectures Carl Jung delivered in 1909 at the 20th anniversary celebration of the founding of Clark University. Gradiva is a novel on childhood love excavated by Norbert Hanold from the ruins of Pompeii. This 1914 work is a polemic against competing theories in psychotherapy, directed at those who opposed his psychoanalysis. Adler and Jung, for example, had previously been followers of Freud but objected to his emphasis on sexual matters. The archetype of the great father represents the realm of light and spirit. A sound balance of the mother and the father, and their representations, is thus required to maintain the continuity of life. When this balance is lost, all aspects of life turn to the negative.
